He was not just replacing any old left-back, but he was replacing the one most considered the best to have ever played the game. Roberto Carlos had won four Liga titles, three Champions Leagues, two Copa Américas and a Word Cup, while individually he had been recognised as the Defender of the Year twice and even finished as runner-up to Ronaldo in the 2002 Ballon d’Or voting.
